About the LA Dodgers
The Dodgers have had legendary players since the franchise was in Brooklyn with such players as Gil Hodges, from Petersburg, IN that’s less than an hours drive from where I grew up in Evansville, IN. or Carl Erskine from Anderson, IN or Roy Campanella, Duke Snider or Pee Wee Reese. And, any baseball fan knows the name Jackie Robinson whose number 42 was retired by Major League Baseball from ever being used if a player wasn’t already wearing it when it was retired. Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees is the only player that has worn it since.
The Dodgers tradition of fielding Hall of Fame players continued after their move to Los Angeles in 1962. Some of the all-time greatest major league pitchers played in the LA Dodgers schedule including Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, both Cy Young award winning pitchers. Sandy Koufax won the award three times. In later years there was Fernando Valenzuela and Orel Hershiser (aka “Bulldog”). Orel is the only pitcher in MLB history to win the MVP award for the NLCS, the World Series and to win the Cy Young award all in one season.
From the time the LA Dodgers arrived in Los Angeles in 1962 and through the 1996 season, the team had only two managers in all of those years, Walter Alston (1954-1976) and Tom LaSorda (1976-1996).
Today another Yankee great, Don Mattingly, whose from my hometown of Evansville, IN manages the Dodgers. When he played for the New York Yankees, his style of play came to be known as Donnie Baseball and later had his number retired by the Yankees. You can see his #23 in Monument Park on your next trip to the new Yankee Stadium.
